What You Should Know About Prostate Cancer

November is a beautiful month. The leaves are changing color and falling off the trees creating a picture-perfect backdrop for family outings. The Christmas decorations are beginning to get dusted off and hung up on display. And men are... growing mustaches?

Seeing the amount of men who take part in this yearly fundraising effort is truly amazing. Did you know that it was started only 14 years ago and has since raised a total of $759 Million for research. These are achievements to be proud of. Prostate Cancer is a horrible disease with very sad statistics.

Prostate cancer used to be very fatal. The 5 year survival rate has gone from 66% in 1975 to 99.3% in 2009. This is largely due to the research and early detection, which the funds from Movember go towards. The other thing Movember can be proud of is raising awareness. Early detection can only be helpful for those men who know to be screened early. Early detection tests became popular in the 1990s and have indirectly saved many lives.

The research being done to prevent, diagnose and treat prostate cancer is continuing to grow. Scientists have found links to certain food substances that might help lower men's risk of getting prostate cancer, such as the isoflavones in soybeans and lycopenes in tomatoes (www.cancer.org). They are also coming up with new, more accurate tests, as well as improving on the current PSA test. A study done by researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research has found that a drug being used to treat breast cancer has shown significant benefits with treating prostate cancer as well. All of these exciting scientific breakthroughs, and the many more to come, will help in the fight against prostate cancer.

The stats don't lie. This is a deadly disease that we, as a society, need to be aware of. And with the help of many "mo bros and mo sistas", funding for more research can continue to be on the rise. Northernchem Inc has a few employees ready for the challenge. Check out our fundraising page for more information and photos of our journey.
